The wind blows from the East
21-11-2010Last week I spent a couple of days in Budapest as guest of the social democratic group of the European Parliament. I used the opportunity to visit some old friends to hear from them what is going on in the country. A lot has changed in Hungary since the national elections earlier this year. And not for the better. No one will deny that the former government of socialist and liberals made mistakes and that an electoral defeat was unavoidable, but the new government led by Fidesz leader Viktor Orban has been taking drastic steps that jeopardize the political and economic future of Hungary.

I have left the European Parliament after fifteen very interesting years and I want to stay in touch - to inform and to be informed. I will keep working - albeit in a different capacity - on the issues that have been high on my agenda. To mention some: Minorities in Europe, improving the quality of new democracies, history and politics, disarmament questions and the international role of the EU.
I intend to report on these activities regularly but I am also available when you have questions or need my support for any of these issues. My CV will tell you more about my background.
From the 1st of September 2009 I will start as part-time research fellow at the Dutch Wiardi Beckman Foundation
